The Puntland government has initiated a large-scale operation against ISIS militants who have been occupying the Cal-miskaad mountain range in the Bari region, where they have maintained strongholds for several years. This operation, named “Operation Elimination of Terrorism,” officially began at the end of December 2024, with the government aiming to completely remove the group from the region.
Results of the Operation
According to official statements, Puntland forces have so far seized 48 key sites previously controlled by ISIS militants. These locations included military bases, training camps, and administrative centers used by the group to conduct its operations.
The fighting has resulted in the deaths of several ISIS fighters, while others have resorted to suicide attacks when faced with Puntland forces. Additionally, militants launched attacks on security force bases, causing casualties among the Puntland security forces, as stated by Puntland’s Security Forces Spokesperson, Maxamuud Maxamed Xasan.
ISIS Attacks
Reports indicate that ISIS militants used drones equipped with explosives to target Puntland forces. However, security forces successfully downed several of these drones deployed by the group.
Reasons Behind the Operation
The operation was prompted by the increasing extortion and criminal activities conducted by the militants against local business owners and the community, forcing them to pay illegal taxes. Complaints from local residents also played a significant role in prompting the government to take decisive action.
Ongoing Operation
Puntland security officials have stated that the operation will continue until all areas held by ISIS militants are fully cleared. The government is committed to eliminating the terrorist threat to ensure peace and stability in the Bari region.
Secured Locations
The locations seized by the Puntland forces include vital areas where the militants were preparing their fighters. It was also revealed that the region was cleared of dangerous materials used by the group to carry out their attacks.
