Turkey, through its diplomatic efforts, has been actively engaging in mediation between Somalia and Ethiopia regarding the ongoing dispute over the Somaliland issue. Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan has hosted separate meetings with Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali in an effort to resolve tensions. The focus of these talks is the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Ethiopia and Somaliland, which Somalia claims threatens its sovereignty.
Turkey’s involvement in what has been called the “Ankara Process” highlights its role as a neutral party, aiming to facilitate constructive dialogue between the two sides. While no joint statement was issued after the summit, Turkish officials expressed optimism that these discussions would lead to a peaceful resolution, contributing to regional stability.
Further diplomatic meetings are planned, with technical discussions to follow in the coming days. Turkey’s role as a mediator in this dispute reflects its broader strategy to maintain peace and stability in the Horn of Africa, especially amidst the ongoing security concerns involving Al-Shabaab and other regional challenge
