Flights to Somalia’s regional areas were disrupted earlier today after domestic airlines refused to transport government troops. This refusal stemmed from warnings issued by the Jubbaland administration, which cautioned airlines against transporting troops to Raaskaanbooni. Jubbaland claimed that such flights would face severe consequences and emphasized that the region was in a critical and unstable situation, making it unsafe for troop transport.
The Somali government responded to this standoff by issuing a strong warning to airlines, stating that any refusal to comply with directives regarding troop transport would result in the revocation of their operating licenses within Somalia.
Following negotiations, the Somali government and domestic airlines reached an agreement. Starting tomorrow, Saturday, the airlines will facilitate troop deployments, with four flights scheduled to transport new troops to Raaskaanbooni in Jubbaland. Over the coming days, a total of 20 flights are planned to deliver troops to the area.
The entire cost of these flights will be covered collectively by the Somali Airlines Association. Despite the agreement, tensions remain high, with Jubbaland authorities maintaining their warnings against troop arrivals in Raaskaanbooni.
